Hospitalist Movement Gaining Ground Drive down the busy Highway 98 corridor in Hattiesburg, Miss., and a new high-tech billboard touts the latest addition to the medical staff at Hattiesburg Clinic.
A neurosurgeon? A cardiologist? A nephrologist?
No, a hospitalist, representing the fastest-growing medical specialty in the United States.
“We’ve been in existence for 10 years and have 19 hospitalists,” said Dr. Steven E. Farrell, medical director of the hospitalist program at Hattiesburg Clinic, which is linked to Forrest General Hospital. LYNNE JETER |
In Home Health Care, If Something Goes Wrong, Who’s to Blame? Home healthcare isn’t just one option out of many for a lot of people, it’s a necessary service. Even if patients or their families are reluctant to use home healthcare, insurance companies are increasing pressure for people to take care of their own medical needs at home. Legal Perspective: New Changes to the Stark Law on the Horizon Like the saying about Mississippi’s weather, if you do not care for the “Stark Law” (the regulations prohibiting physician’s self referrals), you need not wait long until it changes. In September, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the “final rule” for Phase III of the Stark Law. KATHRYN GILCHRIST AND DAVID DONNELL |
Nursing Home Residents Celebrate Patriotism at MHCF Residents’ Convention Red, white, and blue with stars and stripes aplenty peppered the Mississippi Trade Mart just weeks before the 2007 general election.
Decorations, costumes, and prizes reflected everything patriotic, everything political, at the Mississippi Health Care Foundation (MHCF) Residents’ Convention.
Some 400 people who live in nursing homes and their caregivers from Holly Springs to Leakesville and all points in between took part in “Political Rally,” the third annual convention. MHCF offers the event in collaboration with Mississippi Health Care Association (MHCA), with Don Causey, State Farm agent of Ridgeland, as primary 2007 sponsor. NSK WESSMAN |
Physician Spotlight: Dr. Richard J. Galloway Dr. Richard J. Galloway began his career in the classroom, but today he’s channeling those teaching skills in a host of other directions.
As the senior endocrinologist at Hattiesburg Clinic, his mission is to educate diabetic patients on how to manage their own disease. LUCY SCHULTZE |
Public Health Emerges from Destruction Toward Restoration Some two years after the Mississippi Joint Legislative watchdog agency critically reported on a two-year investigation into public health, Senate Public Health Chairman Alan Nunnelee said the worst problem has been fixed and he expects to see positive results by July 2008. Taking Response to Diabetes Beyond Clinic Walls Physicians are getting involved in today’s diabetes epidemic through ways more than just treating patients.
Dr. Jayant Dey of Metabolic Disorders Institute in Tupelo says it’s important for physicians to be in contact with local officials and state legislators as part of efforts to facilitate healthier communities. LUCY SCHULTZE |
The Sleeping Dog Awakens HIPAA Enforcement Increasing The Office of Inspector General (OIG) auditors may be just around the corner.
The chance of HIPAA Security Rule audits taking place has increased as of late. And the increased activity is not a response to particular violations by providers, but rather is a stepping-up of efforts from the Office of Inspector General. DAMON CARPENTER |
WNV Consistently High in Mississippi Since a “depressed horse” tipped the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) to the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) in Mississippi in 2001, the state has consistently — except for 2003 — reported two or three times the national case rate. NKS WESSMAN |
