Flowood Breast Surgeon only Proctor in Mississippi for FDA-Cleared MammoSite® Radiation Therapy

Dr. Christina L. Dial of the Breast Care Clinic of Jackson has been asked by CYTYC Corporation to serve as a proctor for their MammoSite® Five-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy. At the present time, Dr. Dial is the only proctor for MammoSite® in the state of Mississippi. This agreement allows Dr. Dial to train other physicians in the area on the proper use and techniques of the MammoSite® irradiation procedure that is used to treat thousands of breast cancer patients.

Cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, MammoSite® is a balloon catheter that is inserted into the cavity created by a lumpectomy (the surgical removal of a breast tumor). MammoSite® delivers radiation from inside the lumpectomy cavity over a course of five days. The device targets radiation to the area where a tumor is most likely to reoccur, while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. For women who are juggling their career and family or those who may live far away from a radiation center, MammoSite® provides a more convenient option, allowing patients the opportunity to complete radiation therapy (a critical element of breast cancer treatment) in one week rather than six weeks. This gives them the freedom to return to their families, communities and busy lifestyles sooner and with minimal to no side effects.

MHA Donates to Relief Fund for California Hospital Employees

Hospital employees in Southern California are suffering devastating losses as a result of the recent wildfires — some have lost everything, yet continue caring for patients, family members and neighbors affected by the disaster. To help these heroic health care workers rebuild their lives, the California Hospital Association (CHA) has established the Hospital Workers’ Fire Relief Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

All donations will be disbursed in the form of grants to hospitals in affected areas that request funding assistance for their employees. The hospitals will then distribute the grant money to staff who have been seriously impacted by the disaster.

Mississippi Hospital Association Solutions, the for-profit subsidiary of the Mississippi Hospital Association, is making a $1,000 contribution to the fund. “The devastation in Southern California has put a tremendous financial and emotional strain on health care workers and their families,” said MHA President/CEO Sam W. Cameron. “Many of these employees generously helped our hospital employees after Hurricane Katrina. We want to return the kindness now.”

Contributions are tax deductible. To contribute to the fund, send checks, payable to the CHFT: Hospital Workers’ Fire Relief Fund, to CHFT, 1215 K Street, Suite 800, Sacramento, CA 95814. Donors will receive an acknowledgement, along with a receipt for tax purposes.
