Golfers Raise More Than $25,000 to Fight Heart Disease and Stroke
FLOWOOD — More than 144 golfers from across Mississippi participated in the American Heart Association's 2007 Deuce McAllister Nissan Classic Golf Tournament. The tournament raised more than $25,000 to fund research and educational programs aimed at reducing death and disability caused by heart disease and stroke.
The event was held Friday, June 1st at the Refuge Golf Course in Flowood. During the closing ceremonies, teams and individuals received awards for longest putt, longest drive and top two teams. The Arnold Lindsey Band provided music for the festivities.
Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded or contributed to many important discoveries — such as CPR, life-extending drugs (including clot-busters), pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart-lung machine and surgical techniques to repair heart defects. The American Heart Association currently has nearly $1.5 million in research awards at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of Mississippi residents and stroke is No. 3. Call the American Heart Association at 601-321-1200 to find out more about how you can become involved in the fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke.
