Goodwill Industries Honors Top Volunteers
Goodwill Industries of Mississippi held its annual awards dinner in August at the Country Club of Jackson to recognize outstanding volunteer efforts of those who gave of their time and talents to improve the lives of others. Proceeds from the event have enabled Goodwill to serve the community for the past 54 years. Some of those honored were:
Keith Buchanan
Remaining open to the needs of other people has taken Keith Buchanan down what he calls an “adventure in volunteerism.” One early adventure came when Keith was asked to lead worship services at a local prison. This opportunity “blew a door wide open” in his heart as he began to gain insight into the hopelessness experienced by those in prison. Preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over a lifetime is a central passion of Keith’s he has expressed over the years through his leadership in for the Boy Scouts of America and as a middle school Sunday School teacher. After joining the St. Dominic Hospital family in 1986, Keith became involved in St. Dominic’s partnership with Hardy Middle School, where he established a “Book Buddy” program, pairing St. Dominic’s employees as “reading buddies” for each student.
Dr. Suman K. Das.
It was Dr. Das’s idea for the first Mississippi Children’s Museum Educational Fair to create a hands-on learning experience surrounding a car wreck. Students were riveted and eagerly learned the roles of everyone involved in a wreck, from emergency first responders to insurance companies and every profession in between. He is also a member of The South Eastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, one of the largest groups of plastic surgeons from all South and Southwest states. The good doctor also volunteers his time as a board member for St. Dominic Hospital’s Community Outreach Program and as a member of the Steering Committee for the Anti-Racism Task force for St. Dominic Hospital. An educational hero to Mississippi’s children, Dr.Das is an inspiration to all.
Hazel Thornton
Inspired by her daughter, Edith Lynn, Hazel Thornton became involved in many programs that help the mentally challenged live their lives to the fullest. Realizing the need for an auxiliary to work with SON Valley, an assisted-living community for adults with mental retardation, Hazel helped organize the SON Valley Ladies Auxiliary. She served as the organization’s first president and remains active in the group’s projects. Organizations like Willowood Development Center, Mustard Seed, Leukemia Society, March of Dimes, Bethlehem Center and VA Nursing Home have also benefited from Hazel’s dedication and hard work.

University Of Mississippi Health Care Ranks Nationally In Three Specialties In U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Report
University of Mississippi Health Care is nationally recognized in the specialties of cancer, nephrology and orthopedics in U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings. UMHC is the only health system in the state ranked nationally for nephrology and orthopedics.
UMHC tied overall for the No. 1 hospital in the Metro Jackson area with St. Dominic Hospital. Covering 94 metro areas in the U.S., the regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions, according to U.S. News.
The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked hospitals or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The U.S. News metro rankings give many such patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network, according to U.S. News.
Dr. Scott Stringer, CEO of UMHC, said the rankings are the result of the ongoing investments in quality improvement, facilities, world-class physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses and staff.
Stringer added that the citizens of Mississippi deserve nothing less than the very best health care that an academic medical center can uniquely provide without leaving their home state, and these same efforts create a great environment to educate future health care professionals.
Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties—death rates, patient safety, procedure volume and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.
New Doctors’ Survey Says AMA Fails on Health Reform, New Voice Needed
Almost 18 months after President Obama signed healthcare reform into law, America’s physicians have not forgiven the American Medical Association for supporting the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a new survey released recently by Jackson & Coker, a division of Jackson Healthcare. According to the nationwide survey conducted Aug. 1-2, only 13 percent of physicians agree with the AMA’s stance on health reform. It supported the bill and now supports the new law. It has not called for any legal challenges or repeal measures, despite $500 billion in planned cuts to Medicare and no measures to protect physicians from frivolous lawsuits.
