Medical conferences are held throughout the year, but summer is prime time convenioneering.
And although many doctors present papers at mid-year conventions, they could almost be considered working vacations because they are often held in tourist destinations such as New Orleans or Sandestin, Fla.
“It’s also a great opportunity to fellowship with old friends,” said Charles Griffith, a Purvis family practitioner who plans to attend a convention in San Diego in September.
Beverly Smallwood, a Hattiesburg psychologist and author of the self-help book This Wasn’t Supposed to Happen to Me, said she attends the annual Mississippi Psychological Association meeting, and also enjoys circulating at the National Speakers Association convention, which this year will be held in New York City.
“It’s an opportunity to network with and learn from the top professional speakers, who give generously not only in the top-notch programs, but in one-on-one conversations and relationships,” said Smallwood, who devotes about a quarter of her time to speaking engagements around the United States and abroad.
“My practice has always been a combination of clinical work and speaking,” she said. “Speaking professionally not only helps to market my psychological practice, speaking also generates considerable revenue. I believe that I must continually sharpen my skills in all of the services I offer.”
