MSMOC Achieves “Better Performer” Status for Fourth Consecutive Year

Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center (MSMOC) represents the only practice in the state to achieve the coveted classification of “better performer” from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).

In Performance and Practices of Successful Medical Groups: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data, MGMA singled out MSMOC for superior operational performance compared with similar medical group practices nationwide.

MSMOC is the sole practice in Mississippi to earn this distinction this year, which also marks the fourth consecutive year for MSMOC to be honored in performance areas, including productivity, capacity and staffing, and patient satisfaction.

“We’re pleased to receive this distinction again this year,” said Robert R. Lodes, administrator of MSMOC. Established in 1984, the practice is Mississippi’s leading full-service orthopedic specialty practice, with 12 board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists who perform shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot procedures and guide patients through rehabilitation to complete recovery. “It underscores our commitment to administrative performance and positively impacting the patient experience.”

A benchmarking standard among medical groups for nearly a decade, the MGMA report was produced using data from respondents to the MGMA Cost Survey: 2010 Reports Based on 2009 Data, and also data from a questionnaire that assessed management behaviors, practices and procedures of better performers. The report profiles medical practices that have demonstrated success in one or more areas of profitability and cost management; productivity, capacity and staffing; accounts receivable and collections; patient satisfaction; and managed care operations.

As a return on investment for the Central Mississippi community, MSMOC has long made it an outreach priority to “pay it forward” to rising athletes. Every year, the practice organizes a free comprehensive health screening event for more than 5,000 junior high and high school athletes. These screenings include checking blood pressure and pulse, height and weight, flexibility, and general health; administering dental and eye exams; and cardiologists handling echocardiograms.

Also, MSMOC has trained more than 50 rising orthopedic specialists who are practicing medicine throughout North America via its in-house Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship Program, and continues growing the number of fellows coming through the practice. The ACGME-accredited 12-month program provides five approved fellowship positions balanced between upper and lower extremity surgical rotations. Fellows participate in patient care interactions, including clinical office assessments, on-field athletic evaluations and extensive operative experiences, and also observe surgical procedures conducted by top specialists in their discipline.
